TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, is a condition that affects the muscles and joint of the jawbone. TMJ can produce a wide variety of symptoms, some of which include pain in the head, neck, and face. Most dentists are well-informed with regard to this disorder and, in many cases, are able to offer TMJ treatments to lessen the pain and correct the problem:
Causes of TMJ
There are several factors that can lead to the development of TMJ. Clenching the teeth or grinding them together puts pressure on the jawbone joint and can strain the muscles surrounding the jaw. Accidents that involve the structures of the jaw may damage the bones, joint, or muscles. A poor bite, medically known as malocclusion, can sometimes place unnatural stress on the components of the jaw.
Symptoms of TMJ
TMJ treatment is often difficult due to a lack of proper diagnosis. The symptoms of TMJ often mimic other diseases, some of which are very serious. If a serious disease is suspected, it must be ruled out before TMJ treatment can begin. However, it is worth talking to your doctor about the possibility of TMJ if you experience any of the following:
- Tenderness, soreness, or pain of the jaw muscle
- Tenderness or pain in the facial and neck muscles, with or without spasms
- Migraines, or cluster or sinus-type headaches
- Pain or headaches at the back of the head, or a sensitive scalp
- Popping, clicking, or grinding sounds upon movement of the jaw
- Pain in the ears, eyes, or throat without apparent cause
